I remember as a small child being sent by my father to the gas works shop, for Two No:2 Bijou mantles and one No:1 Mantle. It was very rare that I made it home with all 3 mantles intact. We had gas mantles in No: 3 Manor Square till we moved to Queensway in 1965. The last row of 4 cottages No’s: 1-4 were demolished shortly afterwards.

I remember what seemed to me to be a very strange thing on a Gasworks the Sign said, “Gas – Your Obedient servant”. As a child I didn’t understand the punctuation and wondered why you would want to gas your obedient servant.
