Yeadon Cricket Club 1st Eleven – 1909

Cricket had been played in Yeadon for many years, in 1850 it was noted that men finished work on Saturdays then after tea played cricket on Yeadon Moor.

Yeadon Cricket Club was founded in 1859, since 1865 they have played on the pitch behind the White Swan public house.

One memorable match featured W G Grace playing with United South X1 in 1877, the score was United South X1 165, Yeadon CC 58 for 3-rain stopped play.

Many notable cricketers have played for Yeadon CC including Albert Luty, tragically killed in 1883 when hit on the head by a cricket ball. Ted Peate who also played for Yorkshire and England and Hedley Verity who lost his life when a prisoner- of -war in Italy.

In 1909 the Annual Report records that the first three days of Yeadon Feast week games were rained off, cricket matches were an important feature of the annual holiday week.
During the season 14 matches were drawn, 7 without play, in spite of this the club was financially sound with no debts.

In more recent times both Brian Close and Bryan Stott played for Yeadon before going on to enjoy long careers as 1st class cricketers.

The clubs long history of successes are far too numerous to list here, a comprehensive history is on the clubs web-site at

Only one man has been identified, on the seated row is Lawrence Claughton to the right of the middle man.

Many of the players are wearing “snake belts”, an elasticated belt with an interlocking buckle which resembled a snake.
These belts have been around for a long time, first noted on photos taken in the 1860s.
W G Grace recommended wearing a belt instead of braces when playing cricket as belts were less restrictive.

Re DD092
Carlton – 16 January 2014.
The person seated in the centre of the middle row was my great grandfather, Isaiah Brown. He was a bowler and after the semi-final game against Rawdon CC in the Airedale & Wharfedale Cricket League cup competition on 29 July 1911, Yeadon CC presented him with the ball bearing a plaque saying he bowled 15 overs consisting of 10 maidens, 6 runs for 6 wickets. I also have a commemorative gold medallion from the same year. The boy standing in front of him is not my grandfather who would have been 14 years old in 1912, I assume he must be the son of one of the other players.

Re DD092
Hannah1 – 14 June 2014.
Samuel Luty second left on the back row a long time member of the cricket club and he also played football.
