Varleys Fold 1930s
Title Varleys Fold
Date c1930s
Location Yeadon
Photo ID D167
Comment Varleys Fold was entered from Ivegate near the Harper Lane end, this area was once known as Temple Bar. So far in, the street took a sharp turn south towards Harper Lane, it is now the site of Lane Fox Court flats (September 2012) The photo shows Mitchell’s shop on the corner where Varleys Fold turned at an angle. Three women are in the doorway dressed in fashion appropriate to the 1930s, the shop is surrounded by metal advertising signs for products such as Brooke Bond tea and Lyons tea.

I remember Edith Michells shop and used to go there for sweets in the early 30’s untill she moved across the road to the shop at the shop at the junction of Ivegate and Well Hill. She married Solon Megson soon afterwards.

My relatives lived in Varleys Fold they were Carters, Millworkers, Horsemen, and Soldiers. I do not know much about them but I would be grateful for any information. Trevor John Sessions.
