Interior of a living van used by Wood’s workmen. The driver of a steam roller would live in it during the summer, sometimes with his family or could make his way home at the weekends. A few of the drivers lived in the vans all year round at the yard in Yeadon. The van had a stove for heat and cooking, a wash stand with bowl, jug, chamber pot behind the kettle, curtains for privacy and flowers in the window for a homely touch. A sign at the back to be used when work was in progress “Caution Tar Spraying”.

Donated by Jeremy Craske.

I remember the steam roller coming past Southview school and all of us crowding to the railings to see.
I started to listen to the interview with Brian Stott. Very interesting as we are contemporaries, then it disappeared and I lost the rest. He was talking about the Avro and the buses bringing the workers. He may have gone on to talk about the racket the aircraft engines made running day and night. How did we ever sleep through it?
Can you tell me how to access the interview again please.
