| Comment | The girl is Marion German (nee Armitage), the woman with her is Ivy Lawson. The beer advertised outside the White Swan is “Hammonds Bradford Ales”. On the right is a bus operated by the Yeadon Transport Co, operating on a route to Bradford via Guiseley, White Cross and Shipley. Marion’s parents Mr and Mrs Harry Armitage were licensees of the White Swan in the 1920s and early 1930s, Ivy Lawson was employed there. Sydney Howard was in Yeadon making the film “Up For The Cup”, he went into the hotel and asked Mrs Armitage if she could provide breakfast for 30 of the film crew which she did, serving home fed ham, bacon, eggs and her own recipe flat cakes. It was fortunate that her husband kept hens and pigs on land near the White Swan! The licensing trade was in the family, Marion was born at the Red Lion Hotel in Guiseley which was run by her grandparents Mr and Mrs William Pickard. Later she enjoyed playing the piano for concerts at the Temperance Hall in Yeadon. |
