Comment | A view of St. John’s Church, Henshaw, the tower has been removed. In 1974 the tower was found to be unsafe, it was a fault with the original build. The tower had not been “keyed in” to the body of the church and was moving away from it. It would have cost an estimated £15,000 to make the tower secure, this was a prohibitive sum so the decision was made to remove it. |

The reredos is an intricately carved stone screen situated behind the altar which represents the Last Supper and dates from 1893.
David Norfolk is the Church Treasurer and has written a book with Helen Campbell about the reredos which is in need of restoration. Any profits will be used for this purpose.

In the 1950s and 60s, the basement was the home of the 10th Airedale cubs and scouts.

The doors up the steps on the right was the entrance to St. John’s Church Hall & was used as a classroom & gym by Rawdon Littlemoor School in the late 1950s whilst the new Benton Park School was being built. The teacher here Monday to Friday was Mr Simpson who drilled the 3 R’s & sport. One afternoon a week the boys would go to a converted prefab house on the Westfield estate for woodwork lessons whilst the girls did needlework.
The door on the left led to the basement where the 10th Airedale Cups & Scouts met every Tuesday & Friday nights.
