Comment | Situated near Towngate on Queensway, Mellor Garth was built by a local charity, Aireborough Flower Fund Homes. Money is donated in lieu of flowers for funerals. Mr Stanley Waddington of Rawdon wrote an article which appeared in the Ilkley Gazette in 2010 which gave the following information: The charity was founded by the late Mrs Edna Mitchell who was a Labour Councillor for Guiseley ward and a member of the Methodist Church. In the period 1967 – 69 she was Chairman of Aireborough Urban District Council and instigated the Flower Fund as a civic project. In the early years funds came in slowly, money raising events were held to boost the fund. A large sum was donated by Mr Mellor which enabled the first 4 bungalows to be built and named after him. Subsequently another 22 homes were built for the elderly and those in need in the area. They stand as a tribute to Mrs Mitchell and all the people who have worked and contributed to the fund including the late Harry Gray and Mrs Margaret Russell. |
