Jonathan Peate, with his brothers Joseph Long and Caleb built this mill on Otley Road (A65) in 1868.
It was later extended so half lay in Guiseley, half in Yeadon.
The car park is on the right.
Jonathan sold the mill, when it closed it was owned by West Riding Fabrics.
The building was demolished in 1987 and West Side Retail Park built on the site. Not in this view but to the right is Ghyll Royd, a small street of Edwardian Villas which were built for the senior employees of Nunroyd Mill.
When the retail park was proposed all the houses on Ghyll Royd which faced onto the mill car park were given a piece of the car park to form a garden.
A large wall separates the gardens from the retail park entrance/exit roads.

John Hargreaves was a relative of mine. His father was Edmund Hargreaves who had a very skilled job and was well respected at ‘Billy Murgs’ mill. The family lived at Worlds End in Yeadon. John was named after his ? grandfather John Lawson who had Coney Farm. The airport now covers part of that farm. Edmund is my G-G- Grandfather. The family were strongly Wesleyan Methodist and remained so for generations. My mother Kathleen Kitchen nee Smith worked for a time at Murgatroyd’s Mills and was told by some very old workers that she resembled her Great Grandfather. She never tired of telling the story!

The comments don’t say how long Mr Boocock worked for the company, but it must have been quite a long time. I believe he was a very good clarinetist. At one time he and his daughter Julie played in an amateur orchestra under the leadership of Harry Waugh, if my memory serves me well. For a short time I played in the same orchestra.

He worked there all his life, so around 50 years, apart from during the 2nd world war, when he was posted to Rome. Yes, we were both in the orchestra under the leadership of Harry Waugh, which I think if I remember rightly met in the Rawdon Trinity Church School Room.

Julie – thank you for donating all these pictures. It is great to see pictures of my Grandad (Newby Fry) in them.
