Frederick Thomas Greep married Ellen Mayne in 1904 in Plymouth, Devon, (which is where both families came from). They had five children: Frederick, Harold, Eric, Ellen and Leslie – born in two-year intervals from 1905.
The oldest two were born in Plymouth, whilst Frederick was serving in the Navy. According to Naval records he was born in 1876 and joined “Vivid II” as a Stoker 2nd class at the age of twenty in 1896.
Different ships followed and he became Stoker then Stoker 1st class and after becoming a reservist appeared as a night watchman at a mill in Guiseley (1911 census).
At the start of WWI, he was called up and was promoted to acting Leading Seaman, serving in France and Belgium. In 1915, when with the Nelson Battalion of the Royal Naval Division in Gallipoli, he was “killed or died as a result of enemy action” on 3rd May 1915.
He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
