H & S Stott Ltd, plumbers and ironmongers are on the left, then Hudson Brother’s butcher’s shop.
Crockatt’s dry cleaners is next, sharing premises with the Chocolate Box.
In the centre is the Albert Inn on Albert Square.

On the left is Yeadon Picture House which opened in 1925, as with many cinemas attendance dwindled and it closed in 1987.
It became a bingo hall and is now a public house called the “The Yard” (November 2016).
Note traffic on both sides of the road and easy parking.

On the left edge is the Liberal Club, then a dry cleaners. The vacant shop had been Oxfam before they moved to the corner of the High Street with Ivegate then to their present premises higher up on the opposite side of the road. Next, Jack Scott ladies wear then Yeadon Picture House.

Looking down the High Street towards the Steep, on the right is Frank Payne hair stylist, a “washerette”, and Montanari Coffee Bar. The weighing scales are outside a pharmacy and were coin operated.

Editor’s Note: Of the many, many images within the AHS archives, I finally found one which clearly shows the Bar Montanari Coffee Bar, which was so much part of mine, and many others teenage motorcycling years. It was a favoured meeting place for the local bikers their motorbikes parked along side of the pavement nightly. Other local haunts were the Dam Side Cafe up Cemetery Road, the Riverside Cafe, Otley, Cocabana, Harrogate, just to name a few. Wonderful memories. Ed. JB. 26 December 2023.

On the right is Yeadon Library, the service had been transferred from a room in Yeadon Town Hall to the former Co-operative Society premises on the High Street which were closed in 1967. The library opened in June 1968.

On the left are steps leading to the beginning of the Steep (Town Street), the Westminster Bank became Nat West it closed down c2018 and a cafe bar called the Nest opened on the premises. Moving right, looking down to Chapel Lane and the former St. Andrew’s Church Institute which was converted into apartments. The large new building on the right is Haworth Court sheltered housing complex, later extended to the left. It waas demolished in 2015, Wharfedale View was erected on the site for the same purpose in 2016. On the right edge a woman is near the door of the Post Office which at that time was located at the end of the High Street.

In the centre with a white car parked outside is a branch of the Leeds Industrial Co-operative Stores, these premises later became Yeadon Library.
Moving right, Martins dry cleaners, Paramount Stores, The Pork Shop and Marshall Beach newsagents.

The upper High Street, in the centre is the Albert Mill which was demolished in 1971.
On the left edge is Back Alma Street, then Alma Street, next Rockfield Terrace, the view today has changed as properties on Alma Street have been demolished leaving a shorter street with a green space next to the High Street.
On the right is the Albert Inn with the sign for Tetley’s ales outside.
