The Commercial Inn, c1864 & The Yorkshire Rose

The Commercial Inn & The Yorkshire Rose - Undated/2016

Title The Commercial Inn & The Yorkshire Rose
Date Undated
Location Guiseley
Photo ID C414
Comment Now called the Yorkshire Rose, this was the Commercial Inn, locally called the “Long Sign” in reference to the length of the Whittaker’s Brewery sign above the building. The licensee 1864 – 1870 was Richard Whitehead, 1904 Watson Metcalfe had taken over until 1908 when the landlord was Ellison Lund. Workmen on the left are possibly from “Bandy Jack’s” ropeworks which was behind the Town Hall, now Guiseley Theatre.

The Yorkshire Rose – 2016

The Yorkshire Rose was originally called the Commercial, local people referred to it as “the long sign” due to a long brewery advertising sign on the roof.

The house just to the left of the Commercial Inn is where Edwin Riley (Bandy Jack) lived with his wife Ellen (Flaxington). They had 9 children. When Edwin died his son Jim took over the rope making business. Edwin was born in Idle, the son of John Riley who was also a rope maker. Edwin’s son John (known as Jack) was my grandfather.
