Comment | The driver of the carriage is Stephen Whitaker, he was born in Burnsall on January 17th 1865. He worked as a coachman and domestic at Grassington House, Grassington, this is on the 1881 Census when he was 15. He married Mary Rowley on September 28th 1887, she was the daughter of Richard Rowley, a farmer. The family moved from Skipton to Guiseley between 1891/1901, Stephen set up a company at Cassfield and Hawkhill Garages for motor haulage, removals, taxi and ambulance services. The photo is thought to have been taken outside their home at 12 Leeds Road, Guiseley. Their son John Richard born March 25th 1888, is sat next to his father (he died March 15th 1966), their daughter was Alice E and the other son was called Stephen. Stephen Snr and Mary are buried together in Guiseley Cemetery on Netherfield Road. Post Office Directories for 1937 have an entry for the business as taxis and haulage. In the 1938/39 directories they are listed as haulage contractors. The business moved into the disused Wesleyan Chapel off Town Street, Guiseley, and was finally lost to “privatisation”. Vehicles which belonged to the business of S Whitaker & Sons, Guiseley and shows a charabanc parked on Ripon market square. |
