Sitting on a horse which is pulling a cart loaded with household goods to be sold door to door is Geoffrey Brook . This type of salesman was once a common sight selling firewood, cleaning products (including donkey or scouring stones used to give a decorative edge to exterior steps) etc, and of course the rag & bone man.

Geoffrey donated these photos and told us his mother was Hannah nee Chadwick, she was the sister of Bill and Jack Chadwick who ran the White Cross Garage from the late 1940s until the mid 1950s. He lived at 6 Springfield Place where the photos were taken, this house with others including the end property with a bottle of milk on the doorstep (I718) were demolished in 1970.

Geofrey said “Guiseley was undergoing radical changes at that time with much demolition of houses and business premises on Otley Road, Springfield and Towngate”.

Photographs donated by Geofrey Brook.
