Comment | Kenneth Brown is standing in the doorway of the family butcher’s shop at 2 Oxford Road, in front of him is a boy and baby in a traditional coach built pram, probably locally made by the Silver Cross company. To the left is Gallons grocers. Allegedly the butchers business began when a predecessor of the Brown family bought half a pig in a pub, his wife was not impressed as without salting or smoking the meat they had no means of keeping it fresh. He jointed the meat and sold it to neighbours around the Green where they lived making a reasonable profit and so began “Porky” Browns butchers. |
