Comment | Harry Watson was a Primitive Methodist and acted as “rod wielder” in the Sunday School on Otley Road. He would walk round the schoolroom and any child not behaving in a correct pious manner or being inattentive to the lesson would be punished by a stroke or two of his rod! He was a friend of preacher James Myers, the two would go round the district knocking on the doors of those likely to give funds to the chapel, Myers found him to be a useful ally as Watson was a forceful man and could extract money from chapel or churchgoers alike. He worked on the roads in Guiseley and was also the Town Crier which is why he is holding a bell in this image. |
