This photo album was a gift made to Mrs Emily Kendall. It was an event to have a photo taken in the early days of photography, the resulting images were treasured in albums such as this tooled leather example with strong card pockets to protect the photos. Not for the Victorians paper packets of photos jumbled up in shoe boxes and kept at the back of the wardrobe !

Additional Research:
Mrs Emily Kendall 1842 – 1932. Emily was born in Hampshire to Charles (recorded as a labourer/ Parish Clerk) and Dinah. Aged seventeen she was an under housemaid to Justice of the Peace, Francis Marx in Hampshire. Less than five years later, on June 19th 1865, she married stonemason Henry Hudson Kendall at St. Peter’s in Rawdon. They were married for over fifty years – Henry died in 1917 – and had twelve children, with nine surviving. The Micklefield Lane/Little London area of Rawdon was where the family lived and the connection with their locality is very clear in the album as are some of the people therein.

Additional Research:
Arthur Parry Fayers 1851 – 1915. Arthur was a Southerner, born in St. Pancras, Middlesex to Thomas (a lay missionary) and Eliza. Ten years later the family was in Sedbergh and when Arthur was twenty-nine, he had married Emily Thomson (1877), was living in Armley and was a Baptist Minister with two children. He became minister at Cragg Baptist Chapel in 1883 (until 1904) and in the 1901 census he was perhaps on holiday with his wife, as he was registered at a guest house in St. Saviour’s Parish, Jersey. He lived in the Micklefield Lane area of Rawdon, in old age and there a nurse in the household for “The Head” – i.e. Arthur.

Portrait of the Rev. C H Spurgeon, possibly a Baptist Minister, other images in the album show wedding groups outside Rawdon Baptist Chapel.
Additional Research:
Revd. Charles Haddon Spurgeon 1834 – 1892. Although a direct connection (perhaps there isn’t one and he is included due to the family’s Baptist ties) with the Kendall family or Rawdon is not evident, Reverend Spurgeon had become “world renown” in his time and many descriptions and articles can be found regarding his ministry. He was Essex born – Kelvedon – and was preaching at a very early age, becoming a Baptist at the age of sixteen – although he didn’t remain a Baptist throughout his ministry. He worked in the Cambridgeshire, Southwark, Clapham and Croydon areas and regularly preached to congregations numbering 10,000. He wrote many books, had his sermons, letters and essays printed and formed Almshouses, an orphanage and a Pastor’s College. Reverend Spurgeon had a history of poor health and liked to go to Menton in the South of France to rest. This is where he died.

“Brother Augustus Cecil Kendall” noted on the frame of the photo.
Additional Research:
Augustus Cecil Kendall 1880 – 1963. Augustus was the fifth son of Henry and Emily Kendall. He is found marrying Mary Smith in 1904 in Oxfordshire; he at an address in Banbury and she from a Glasgow address. By now he is a chemist which suggests the relocation from Rawdon was due to his work. Seven years and four children later the family was in Halifax. On May 8th 1925 Augustus, Mary and Leslie (aged fifteen) were aboard the Montroyal, heading for Quebec and Montreal from Liverpool. They arrived a week later and the passenger list gave a son’s address as his destination. The Canadian census of 1931 has the parents and now three sons living in Verdun, which is in Quebec Province. Augustus died in Vancouver at the age of eighty-two.

Alfred Henry Kendall.
Additional Research:
Alfred Henry Kendall 1868 – 1943. Alfred followed his father’s occupation, that of a stone mason, and he married Maggie Kendall (daughter of John and Ellen) in 1898. The 1901 census states that he was an assistant overseer to a mason and they had one son John Henry Kendall. Later in the year they were aboard the Whakatane, bound for Wellington, New Zealand. The ship’s manifest showed he was a builder and his son was two years old. New Zealand cemetery records list his death in 1943 and that of his wife in 1965 in her ninety-sixth year. (Tongaporutu Cemetery, New Plymouth District, Taranaki).
