Cragg Wood Spite and Malice – Undated
This folly is situated near a ginnel or snicket through the woods off Cliffe Drive, it is known as the “Spite and Malice”.
Allegedly two wealthy families were residing at either end of the ginnel, the Ripleys at Acacia to the West end and the Briggs at Cliffe Cottage to the East.
Apparently the families built increasingly higher walls between the properties to prevent one being spied upon by the other until there were large towers on both sides! These were referred to as the Spite and Malice. Perhaps the antagonism stemmed from religious or political differences, This would have been in the mid 19th century. Some remains of them can still be found (2021).

Used to love going to Spite and Malice to play and gather bluebells, wood anemones and celandines in the Spring time – happy memories.

Lovely memories of playing here as a child and trips to Cragg Wood to pick bluebells remember the carpets of Celandines and wood anemones and the strong woodland smell of wild garlic about this time of year.

This used to be part of both our Junior and Senior cross-country course we called “The Loop”, as it didn’t turn off up Spite and Malice, but stuck to the road on towards Woodlands Hospital, then came back on the trackway on the other side.
Running up Spite and Malice in the middle of winter usually meant a treacherous, steep, rocky, wet mess, which could be anything from a tiny stream to a raging torrent!
Happy days (now I’m warm!)
