Woodlawn – 1900
People sitting on a bench in the garden of Woodlawn, the house was built in the 1860s for William Dewhirst, a Bradford cloth merchant who died in 1885.
The occupant from 1911 to the late 1920s was William Clifford (Billy) Gaunt, a disreputable millionaire and theatrical backer, he died in 1941.
The house was used to billet troops during WW2 and was later demolished.
The Spinney was built on the site, the name Woodlawn and the gateposts are said to have survived.

There is a large stone house called “Woodlawn” on Apperley Lane, on the left going down the hill from Little London towards Apperley Bridge. It was the home of one Vicky Broughton in 1959 when she accompanied me to the ‘flicks’ in Yeadon. Possibly this is it?

A William Dewhirst, presumably the same man, had Buckstone Hall (‘The Castle’) on Cliffe Drive built in 1874. The Dewhirst family lived there until well into the twentieth century. There is more about this in my recent booklet ‘The Halls of Rawdon’ – copies in Rawdon Community Library & Aireborough Historical Soc. (Yeadon Town Hall).

Jan Jones: The photographer E E Slater quite clearly marks these photos as Woodlawn and we have followed his lead. Carlo Harrison
