Six of the Barrett brothers are seen on the scaffolding.
The Church was built on the instigation of John Warrington in the grounds of his house “Liseux” on Woodlands Drive.
The foundation stone was laid in November 1907, unfortunately Mr. Warrington died before the Church was consecrated in 1909.
In 1962, Spike Milligan was married there to Patricia Ridgeway.
The Church was closed in 1989 and is split into 4 apartments, St. Joseph’s Court.

This Catholic Church was built in Cragg Wood by John Warrington, a mine owner from Normanton.
He lived in the house called ‘Lisieux’ on Woodlands Drive and had the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel and St Joseph built in the grounds of his property.
Edward Simpson of Leeds was the architect, John Barrett and Sons of Rawdon were the builders.
Warrington died before the church was consecrated in 1909, it was not a large building seating a congregation of 120.
The church and house were left to the Sisters of Notre Dame who remained there until 1950.
When the Catholic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul opened at New Scarborough in 1956, attendance at St. Joseph’s dwindled, finally the church was closed in 1989.
It has since been converted into 4 apartments , now called St. Joseph’s Court. (January 2013)

A message on the reverse reads:
“Dear Cousin Thanks for the card, pleased you are having a good time & we hope the weather will keep up for you. Have you had a sail yet I can recommend it, very windy here are you going to stay longer. Your loving cousin’s ?”
It was sent to a Mrs. Dibbs staying in Fleetwood.
