Liberal Club – 2013

The Liberal Club on the High Street, decorated for centenary celebrations having been built in 1913.
It was the second Liberal Club to be built on the High Street, the first was a little higher up on the left.

During a weekend of celebrations in April, MP Greg Mulholland presented a Parliamentary Motion to the club to commemorate in Parliament the club’s past and present:
“Early Day Motion 246 – That this House celebrates the centenary anniversary of the Yeadon Liberal Club in it’s current High Street location and it’s rich and vibrant history since it’s establishment at this current site in 1913; notes the important role that the Yeadon Liberal Club has served as a popular community centre of Yeadon; acknowledges the Liberal Government in the UK in 1913 under Prime Minister Herbert Henry Asquith; and it recognises, on it’s centenary, the character of this historic institution and it’s reflection of the legacy of the great industrial town of Yeadon.”

I remember Grace well, at this stage of her life i think she lived on Rufford Avenue. One of her sister’s taught me in primary school. I seem to know quite a few of these faces but not the names but one who is very memorable is Mrs Phil Routh the local plasterer’s wife who lived at the top of football.

I would date this photo around 1930/40 as the woman third in from the right, Middle row was Miss Dennison who lived on Rufford avenue and taught at Yeadon South View.
