Comment | Bloomingdale Lane leading to Bloomingdale Farm. A man is surveying the ruts in the road, was this farm towards Horsforth, possibly on Bayton Lane? |
At first, at the turn of the 20th century, it seemed that the Croft family had inhabited Bloomingdale for over twenty years, with Joseph and his wife Jane (Gill) bringing up three children there – Sarah, John and William.
However, looking further back in census records there had been Croft’s at Bloomingdale since at least 1861, farming about fifty acres.

Before paid Holidays in the thirties my parents used to walk us up Bloomingdale Lane on our way to Golden Acre Park where we would spend the day and then walk or be carried back home.

The site of the former farm buildings is now part of Leeds Bradford Airport, on the Northern side of the runway and close to the start at its South Western end. The farm appears to have been compulsorily purchased by Leeds Corporation in the 1930s, initially for a reservoir, but the land was later used to extend the airport.
