These photos were taken by E E Slater and show the ladies of South View Terrace taking great pride in their environment, sweeping and swilling the flags (pavements) with water most probably left from their Monday wash day.
This ensured the outsides of their homes were as pristine as the interiors, no easy task with the soot, smoke and grime from the surrounding mills.

The end of South View Terrace looking towards Harper Lane, the houses in the centre of the view are part of Harper Rock, here the road turns to the right to give access to the other side of South View Terrace.
