Comment | Clifford Abraham Moon was the grandson of William Murgatroyd, his mother was one of Murgatroyd’s daughters, it was presumed that Clifford would eventually take over the running of Moorfield Mill. This was not to be, Clifford was killed serving in the First World War, he died in 1918. Control of the business passed to three of Murgatroyd’s sons- in -law, Charles Moon, Ben Robinson (married to Elsie Mabel Murgatroyd) and Harry Holgate, they were joined by a nephew Harry Murgatroyd. In turn management of the business went to Jack Murgatroyd Robinson (son of Ben Robinson and Elsie Mabel) and Sydney Holgate, nephew of Harry Holgate. A fourth generation entered the firm with Directors Clifford Moon and Dennis Petty who were both great-grandsons of William Murgatroyd. By 1969 demand for the fine woollen cloth they produced had dwindled and the mill was closed down. |
Clifford was born in Guiseley in September 1894 and he became an apprentice in woollen cloth manufacturing.
His military career started in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers – he was Lance Corporal 16834 – thence to The Scottish Rifles (40742).
He was later appointed to a commission (Second Lieutenant), attached to the 9th Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He first entered the war on May 24th 1915 and served in Gallipoli and France and on documents was termed “wounded and missing.”
Clifford was single and lived in Moor View when he died. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France and also in Yeadon cemetery on his Grandfather Murgatroyd’s memorial.

I was at school with Dennis Petty and also knew both he and Clifford Moon when I worked with Gilbert Petty, Dennis’s Father and presumably Billy Murgatroyd’s grandson, but I never new the exact relationship until now , Very interesting.
