Comment | Reproduced with kind permission of The British Newspaper Archive. Research by Edwy Harling. “Since our last was committed to York Castle, Thomas Clegg, a private soldier in the 7th regiment of dragoons, charged by the Coroner’s inquest with killing and slaying Samuel Atkinson, in the township of Yeadon near Otley” |
A timeline to support the newspaper extract:
September 22nd 1794, a list appeared in The Leeds Intelligencer and Thomas Clegg was required to attend the Leeds Sessions on October 9th.
October 6th 1794, the description of Samuel Atkinson’s death.
March 16th 1795,a notice that the Assizes at York would commence a week later when Thomas Clegg would be “charged with the killing Samuel Atkinson of Yeadon.” This in front of Judge Heath.
April 6th 1795, the paper reported “Thomas Clegg, acquitted.” (Hopefully the same Thomas Clegg as no further details were given.)
