J E Chadwick outside his jeweller’s shop on the High Street.
He inherited the business in 1920 from his father, W B Chadwick who had begun trading in 1877.
John had the shop until 1945 when poor health made him retire.
With a few friends John formed Gem Pictures, they showed silent films in the Temperance Hall for about 13 years.
He also played cello in a trio with Jack Chaney and Syd Roberts.
One of his regular tasks was a weekly call at Carlton Manor where he wound up all the clocks.
Often, when his duties at the Temperance Hall finished at 10.30pm, he would go back to the shop and repair watches until the small hours.
