George Herbert was a familiar figure to local folk, he was a busy man, Chairman of Yeadon Council, Magistrate and Justice of the Peace. He had a drapers & outfitters shop on the High Street and supported local good causes, organising fund raising events for the Hospital Fund, he also arranged for Goldthorp Marshall’s steam organ to come to the annual Yeadon Feast for a Sunday performance where donations could be given to the Hospital Fund.
Amateur dramatics were another source of interest to him and shows at the “Peeps” (Peoples Hall or Theatre Royal) and the Town Hall always had his support. He lived on Rufford Park and was buried in Yeadon Cemetery. He can be easily spotted on many of the photos in the AHS archive, this one was taken by E E Slater who lived at Hopeville, it is certain the two men would have been friends, living close to each other , involved in the same social circles and local affairs.
