Comment Situated on Ivegate, the Crown Inn is still serving drinks to thirsty drinkers! A large group of men are outside the Crown, a notice above the door informs “Crown Inn Elijah Preston Licensed to sell Ale, Porter and Tobacco to be consumed on the premises. Licensed for Billiards” Another sign announces “Wm. Whitaker & Co’s Fine Ales”

In my Teens and twenties we used to meet in the Crown for a drink before going into the dance at the Town Hall on Saturday nights.

My great grandfather Elijah Preston the licensee, is stood on the step at the back of the photo, he’s on the right hand side.
