South View School, 1884 – 2004 (1)

South View Undated

Title South View School
Date Undated
Location Yeadon
Photo ID B383
Comment South View School was built in 1884, the land in front of the school would be built on to form part of Brooklands Crescent. Harper Lane is to the left edge, the other side of the school faced on to Rufford Avenue. When the first pupils were admitted on 8th January 1884 it was boys only. Building work was still in progress on the areas for girls and infants. It was to accommodate 1070 children, segregated as boys, girls and infants. Each department had it’s own entrance with cloakroom and necessary facilities. This school building was demolished in 2004/05 and a new school erected on the site which is now called Rufford Park Primary. (August 2012)

A class of boys with two schoolmasters, one of the boys holds a sign “Standard V”, the location and name of the school was not given with the photograph. I have placed it here as the stonework looks as if it could be South View School. If anyone can identify the location I will move this piece accordingly.
