It is likely that the photograph shows Joseph Oliver Cockshott rather than John Oliver. Joseph married Eva Lee in 1907, both were born in Yeadon and they were still in Yorkshire (Ashgrove, Greengates) four years later with two children, Harry and Leslie.
A third son William was born in Jamestown on August 19th 1912, the year they arrived in New York State (although one census record states immigration occurred in 1911).
Both parents worked in textile manufacturing – an assistant in a dye house and piece marker in a worsted mill.
Draft registration forms for WW1 and WW2 plus census returns show that he lived in Livingstone Avenue, Jamestown for many years.
After Joseph’s death in 1947, Eva re-married and died in 1961.

The photo was taken prior to the family going to live in Jamestown, NY, America.

“Of 29 Ash Grove, Greengates, grandson of the late local preacher John Preston has been Killed-In-Action in France, he was 33 years of age. He joined the 5th Kings-Shropshire-Light-Infantry in February 1916, he was an old scholar of Greengates-Wesleyan-Methodist Sunday School.
