A group photo taken on a slide by E E Slater, on 24th May 1915. Judging by the date it could well have been one of the Whitsuntide gatherings held at Slater’s home Hopeville for members of Queen Street Methodist Chapel.

A Methodist Circuit garden party held in the grounds of Hopeville House. The immediate post WW1 period brought a change in ladies’ fashions as seen here, shorter skirts and smaller hats very different to the elaborate Edwardian gowns and millinery women had worn in the pre-war period.

Children dressed in their new Whitsuntide clothes out for a walk, probably with a Chapel group having left Hopeville House. The location is the bottom of the High Street, behind them is the Steep (Town Street) and to the right is Silver Lane.

We used to help Dad with the garden when we were little. Our house was built in the grounds of Hopeville House. We used to find old coins and bits of fancy crockery. I wish we had kept them.
