Park Road 1989

Title Park Road
Date 1989
Location Guiseley
Photo ID FB105
Comment Property on Park Road, text reads: “Supermarket giant Wm. Morrison intends to rip down the only remaining house on the site of a multi-million pound store development in Guiseley, Leeds, it is claimed. Angry residents plan to swamp the city council planning office with letters of protest following the company’s application for permission to demolish the listed building in Park Road, believed to be part of a former farmhouse. A row of stone-built terrace houses stood on the site until they disappeared – demolished by Morrison’s despite assurances they would be preserved – leaving No:50, which stands next door to Guiseley Working Men’s Club. Mr Colin Farrell, the club secretary, said members were “more than a bit peeved” that the building, understood to be one of the oldest in the town, could finally come under the bulldozer.”

The digger is parked on the site of my outside toilet at 9 and 7 Edward Street….Nobody remembers Edward Street – it is the orphan child of AHS. It was meant to be numbers 9,7,5,3,1 but only 9 and 7 were built – the rest was my garden where we had 200 hens, 50 rabbits, ferrets etc, etc, there was even a piggery in the part of our garden next to Barret Street (ran up to the chapel from Cross Street). We owned 9 and 7 and made them into one house.

The foreground is Morrisons car park, entrance and exit. The building middle right is the block of flats for the elderly.
The first building left was demolished and is now the site of a nursery, originally Morrison’s put in plans for a petrol
station, it was refused.
