John started life and work in Norfolk c1835. At fifteen he was a farmer’s labourer and ten years later was a gamekeeper, with a gamekeeper father. Thereafter, he worked at Spofforth, at Carlton Old Hall for the Langley family and in later life as a gardener in Otley.
He died in Skipton in 1913, aged seventy-seven.
