St. Oswald's C of E School 1916

Title St. Oswald’s (C of E) School
Date 1916
Location Guiseley
Photo ID E067
Comment Children at Guiseley National School (St. Oswald’s) celebrate Empire Day dressed in costumes and with flags. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, it was decided that her birthday 24th May, would be marked by a national celebration, the first Empire day was on the 24th May 1902. Children would salute the flag, sing patriotic songs and be told tales of national heroes who had shaped the British Empire. By the 1950s, the idea of Empire began to decline, the conquering of other lands no longer a matter of celebration, in 1958 Empire Day was renamed Commonwealth Day.

It is good to see this photo and chart of names on this site. I sent the photo and names to Martin Rigg for his book a number of years ago. My mum is on the photo. To find out the names of the other pupils I visited her school friends and her cousin in 1988, just after mum died.

Some comments from our facebook page 20th May 2015:

Rachel O’Connor: So it is. Think the lad far right back row was Paul Goya? Roger Waite back left.
Tommy Broadwell: Looks like Robert Gill holding the cup.

Mr Lupton literally changed my life and I went from bottom the class to top of the class under him. He taught me to make model ships out of cardboard and how to seal them with candle wax. I was fixing my house in Wisconsin yesterday, using measuring skills he taught me. That is my class and I recognize them all, except girls, I wasn’t keen on girls at that time.. but I am missing ! Where am I…Mr Lupton lived in the prefabs opposite Peate’s Mill.

Facebook comments 1st August 2017:
Stephen Wilson: Front row, end right, Adrian Sessions?
Graham Wadsworth: That’s Adrian Ramsden.
Stephen Wilson: Graham Wadsworth, yes I remember now, he used to live round the corner to me on Coppice Wood Avenue.
Wendy Webster: Behind Adrian Ramsden, Roger Cawood. Also on pic Tim leach, Christine Newman, Chris Dobson, Roger Waite, Robert Webster, Paul Goya, Paul Heaton. Not so sure about anybody else. Definitely St. Oswald.s. Jim Lupton wrote it.
Robert Scully: I think the kid in the middle, front row is me. Back row third from right is John Robson.
Judith Thackray: Ah, Wendy Webster you haven’t changed a bit…
Wendy Webster: Omg, Judith, I remember it well. I had to sing a solo xx

Allserene, you may well be in the same position as me. Where am I? I suspect NOT in Mrs Ward’s 1958 class, but in Eddie Meachin’s 1959 class, where I knew about two thirds to three quarters of these people, and me and Frank Jukes brought in the milk and ran the coal out to the prefabs. And I loved Isobel Houseman to bits. Wisconsin? Got as close as Montana and Wyoming, six weeks ago. I’m in rural Wellington NZ. Guiseley kids went everywhere, eh?

Comments from our facebook page:
Elizabeth Webb: I remember Mr Lupton and Mr Meachin (some years later) as teachers at St. Oswald’s School.
Christine Robinson: Mrs Jennings there in the background.
Angie Gilbert: I also remember Mr Lupton, he gave me violin lessons, he was my favourite teacher. I also remember Mr Meachin, he scared everyone, throwing blackboard rubbers at the class, never did us any harm though!!! St. Oswald’s.
Betty Dodsworth: I remember Mr Lupton, he was a teacher at St. Oswald’s School in Guiseley.
Liz Vernon: Mr lupton was my teacher a kind man.

Hi Shirley,
It’s still nice to look back at old pictures of Guiseley, I myself was was at St. Oswald’s school in the 1960s.
The picture with your mum on looks like it was taken at the side of the school just off the Green, but the one sent by Lynda Keith looks like it was taken at the rear of the school with the chimney of Peats Mill in the back ground and not spring Head Mill.
Regards, Gary W.
