Egerton Terrace – c1920s

Egerton Terrace c1920s

Starting from the left is the paper and sweet shop which was run during the 50s and 60s by Mr & Mrs Hardacre, foloowed by Mr & Mrs Austin and then by Mr & Mrs Stead. Egerton Terrace starts immediately to the right of the paper shop and finishes at the bakery, the building just right of centre.

The Nags head ale house can just be seen on the right hand side and is the only image that we know of which shows the ale house sign hanging from the building.

Editor’s Note: From the paper shop running the length of Egerton Terrace behinbd the high stonbe wall which runs adjacent the road, was a small footpath with access to each individual house.

The footpath at the very far end, did not give access to town Street but carried on around the side of the end terrace house and then back along the rear of the terrace until it came out and joined Intake Lane where the paper shop was located.

The acces road/track at the rear of Egerton Terrace was unmetalled, rough and uneven and opposite the rear of each terraced house were some individual outbuildings. Ed. JB. 25 December 2023.

Egerton Terrace – c1920s

At this time I am unsure of the name of the donor of the following images but here is a transcript of what they said on this photo postcard:

My family obviously had a cheeky sense of humour! This photo shows the ladies of
Egerton Terrace. The photo was sent to cheer my grandma up (Eva Jones).
My grandparents were living in Sheffield at the time and grandad was out of work.
The lady 2nd from the right is my grandma’s half sister Nellie Beck the daughter of
Sarah Elizabeth Richardson and Sam Smith. I think the year would be about 1924.
When my grandparents moved back to Rawdon they lived at 1 Egerton Terrace for the
rest of their married life.
