Comment A couple with a baby are in the shop doorway, presumably Mr and Mrs Eastwood. Mr Eastwood was a casualty of trench warfare having been gassed in the First World War. The shop, which was in the vicinity of the present Morrisons store, has a full window display of sweets, chocolates and cigarettes. The board above the window gives the proprietor’s name as Mrs S Eastwood.

John Denison: I was one of Laura’s morning newsboys for 3 years from the age of 11, started at end of 1937.

Raymond Stranger: The shop was then taken over by my grandparents Tom and Ethel Myers, Ethel was an Eastwood before meeting Tom, and when they retired my parents Les and Laura stranger took it over until all the land in that area was compulsory purchased by the council.

Consolidated by Jack Brayshaw. 11 November 2021.
