Aireborough Civic Society are pleased to announce the unveiling of a Blue Plaque in honour of Jonathan Peate, JP (1837-1921)
Aireborough Civic Society is asking former employees of Nunroyd Mills and other interested people to make contact.
This is so that they can be given an invitation to the official unveiling of a Blue Plaque in September in recognition of the importance of Jonathan Peate in the history of Yeadon and Guiseley.
The idea of a Blue Plaque came from Rex Learmonth who was employed at Nunroyd Mills from 1953 until 1970.
He recently researched the history of the Peate family at the request of his friend Richard Driver (the Guiseley estate agent) who was a descendant of the Peate family.
As a fitting conclusion of this work he suggested to Councillor Graham Latty that a Blue Plaque be erected in recognition of one of the area’s largest employers and greatest philanthropists.
This was supported by Councillor Latty and he approached Aireborough Civic Society, who commissioned the Blue Plaque.
Graham said “I am delighted to have had a hand in realising Rex’s idea of this commemoration of one of Aireborough’s great philanthropists.
The plaque will be a permanent reminder to future generations of the debt we owe to people such as Jonathan Peate.

A Blue Plaque to commemorate Jonathan Peate which was the work of Aireborough Civic Society, it is seen here in Nunroyd Park a short distance from Nunroyd House where Jonathan lived for many years with his wife Ruth. Ex-employees of Nunroyd and Springhead Mills were invited to be present at the unveiling of the plaque which took place in September 2012, a group of them are in this photo:
