Carnivals – 1920s
Standing on a cart belonging to Lee & Lupton Builders are 5 girls.
They were taking part in a tableau which depicted the parable of the 10 Wise and Foolish Virgins or bridesmaids.
The 10 girls were invited to a wedding, the wise 5 had a good supply of oil in their lamps, the 5 foolish did not.
The bridegroom arrived after dark when the 5 wise girls were able to light his way. It is thought to warn that preparation is needed to enter Heaven.

A photograph showing a carnival horse drawn float travelling along Ivegate towards the top of the Steep. The float is open sided with a side and overhead trellis bedecked in shrubs and greenery.
Seated in the middle of the float is a young woman dressed in a long white gown with long hair and whose eyes are covered with a white scarf. A young girl also dressed in white is seated behind her. It is hard to make out but there could be a further two children seated in front of the main character. What did this float represent?
At this point the procession has just passed The Crown public house and is now opposite the Taylors and Clothiers shop of N F Thomas.
Crowds of people and children line both sides of the street

A photograph perhaps taken a few moments before or after the image above showing a horse drawn open topped carriage with driver with what appears to be four local dignitaries wearing bowler hats seated in the carriage. This carriage is followed by an early motorcar. What a splendid sight you can almost here the sound of the horse trotting along and the sound of the cars motor approaching.

There are only five. I knew they would struggle to find ten virgins in Yeadon.
