AVRO – 1939 – 1945
The Bristol Aero Company had a factory on Cemetery Road during the 1939-45 period, it was used to test and maintain aircraft engines like the Bristol Pegasus and the Bristol Hercules.
The engines were constructed by sub-contractors in the area, one was the Hammond Sauce works at Apperley Bridge.
The Bristol Pegasus engine powered Fairey Swordfish aircraft built at Sherburn-in-Elmet, Halifax’s were fitted with Bristol Hercules engines, also the Short Sunderland flying boat.
There was no connection to the better known AVRO factory.
This is a photo of the last engine to be produced, 6014 probably at the Hammonds site.
The men seen with it included B Hogg, Jones, Manager G Edge and gate police with Chief Inspector Heaps.
