Comment | Looking down the Steep it is obvious why locals always call this street the Steep rather than Town Street. The pale coloured building at the bottom is Parmar’s newsagents. Photographer Carlo Harrison. |

View down the Steep all the lights in the windows of the old Temperance Hall can be seen at the bottom, now occupied by various business ventures (June 2016). The sign for fish & chips points down to the “Oldest Fish & Chip Shop in the World” on Sandy Way which is unseen on the left.

On one occasion I was sent from Ledgard’s Otley depot to bring back a coach which had been lent to Yeadon depot (arguably in Rawdon by an inch or two !!) and I decided to go down The Steep, cobbled at that time – contrary to the Company’s rules – and before I gingerly reached the Kirk Lane junction I wished I hadn’t as the descent seemed insecure to say the least – any incident would have certainly meant instant dismissal.
