| Comment | The location of this image is unknown but it is believed to have been taken in the grounds of Hopeville House, Yeadon. The car is very probably a Humber model, Reg. AK 857. The passenger with the flat cap is Ernest Ethelbert Slater, son of local historian Philomen Slater author of “The History of the Ancient Parish of Guiseley”. Ernest was born in 1850, he was manager of Manor Mill, a trustee of Queen Street Chapel and a member of Yeadon Photographic Society. He lived at ‘Hopeville’, in Yeadon, a substantial house which is now two apartments (January 2013). He died in 1928, his prolific photographic activities have contributed to the Aireborough Historical Society archive. |
From enquiries made in May 2023, it has been established that the vehicle was first registered in Sheffield. The Motor Car Act 1903 came into force on 01 January 1904 when all cars required to be issued with a number plate. This image may well have been taken around 1910. This image was captured on a glass slide by E E Slater and digitally transferred by John Hobson, it shows an elderly woman smoking a clay pipe. If this image was taken around 1900 and the woman was 70 years old plus, she would have been born before Victoria became Queen in 1837! The image is simply titled ‘Grandmother’. Editor’s Note: G236 above was located with other images known to have bee taken by E E Slater. G236A was found within the archives under photo ID: F335 and titled ‘Grandmother’, with no further details. Without the original slide I am unable to state which view is the original taken by E E Slater. I would say the the correct image is G236A – with the majority of people being right handed her walking stick is placed to her right, with her right hand free to light her pipe. As a previous pipe smoker myself and being right handed, this would be my preferred choice. As always, open to contradiction. Jack Brayshaw. 13 July 2022.

Ernest Ethelbert Slater, an accomplished amateur photographer, seen here sat by the pond in his garden at ‘Hopeville’.
Thanks to his interest in photography we have many images of life in the area 113 years or so ago which give us a prime source of historical material.

Ernest was born in 1850 the son of Ann (Nee Murgatroyd) and Philomen Slater who was the author of “The History of the Ancient Parish of Guiseley”.
Ernest was manager of Manor Mill and a Trustee of Queen Street Chapel.
He is remembered for his love of photography, at that time the occupation of a gentleman of means.
He was a member of the Yeadon Photographic Society and took extensive images of the area and it’s people.
Many of the images which remain are on glass slides, his work has proved invaluable in recreating an accurate picture of Yeadon as it used to be.
He lived at ‘Hopeville’, Harper Lane and died in 1928.

Ernest Ethelbert Slater was the son of local historian Philomen Slater, he was a manager at Manor Mill, lived at ‘Hopeville’ and was a gifted photographer, being a founder member of Yeadon Camera Club.
At that time photography was an expensive hobby, the prerogative of those with funds to spare. Image originally on a glass slide.
