Sea-side frolics at Bexhill-on- Sea, caught on camera by Ernest Slater. A charming trio of images show the late Victorian/ Edwardian’s enjoying their time on the coast, paddling and posing by a rowing boat. For the more modest there is a bathing machine which allowed the person wishing to swim or immerse themselves in the sea the privacy to change . The machine would then be hauled into the waves where the occupant could step into the water then back again without exposure to onlookers. Queen Victoria used one of these machines on the Isle of Wight when staying at Osborne House Her island home.

Seaside fun at Bexhill-on-Sea ! Apart from the bathing huts and fashions in dress nothing changes the pleasure of a day on the beach, these images were taken over a 100 years ago but the paddling, digging in the sand and boats still make a holiday.

This group of photos were all taken in the Lake District by E E Slater. They show a steam locomotive arriving at a station in the Lake District, a coach arriving at the Scawfell Hotel in Keswick and carts crossing the fells. The boat pier at Bowness on Windermere and the Ruskin Museum at Coniston. The museum was opened in 1901 by W Collingwood, an artist employed by John Ruskin as a secretary. Ruskin was an eminent Victorian art critic and author, his most enduring novel is “King of the Golden River”.
H735 – 04 May 23 – has been identified by Philip Archdale using Google Search & Photos, to be Furness Abbey Station.

Hello, the top photograph has been mislabelled as Bexhill on Sea in Essex (D771 – Bexhill on Sea, c1900.). The photograph is of Sandsend, near Whitby. You can compare it to a photograph of Sandsend taken here: https://www.mediastorehouse.com.au/mary-evans-prints-online/new-images-july-2023/sandsend-near-whitby-victorian-period-32364798.html
I suspect that some of the other seaside photographs are also around Sandsend and Whitby.
I think the various Whitby/Sandsend Historical Societies and Facebook groups would be fascinated to see these photographs.
Hi Darren ,
Many thanks for the information & well spotted. As you have suggested, I will get the archivists to take a look at all the seaside Slater images. We will also make contact with Whitby /Sandsend Historical Society.
Once again many thanks
