Comment | The name on the back of this image is John William Slater, 91 Hawthorn Avenue. No further information has been found about this young soldier. |
Although it has been difficult to identify John W. Slater in military records (could his cap badge be Durham Light Infantry?) he has been located in census records via the Hawthorn clue. In the 1939 register he was registered at 79 Hawthorn Avenue; his date of birth 9th February 1897. His occupation was “shoeing and general smith” and he was married to Fanny (nee Ingham) with three children. He had married on 26th March 1921 at Yeadon, St. Andrew’s, when twenty-four years of age. John’s parents were Davis Lincoln Slater and Mary Ann (nee Marshall), he had one sister Sarah Ellen and they had lived Lower Queen Street and Granville Terrace. John William died at the age of eighty-one in 1978.
