George Washington Sutcliffe – 1907

Portrait of George Washington Sutcliffe, with details on the reverse.

Donated by Andrew Emsley.

George was born in 1889 and records show that by the age of twenty-one, four years after his photograph, he was in a Burnley hotel (via Yeadon and Horsforth) working as “hotel boots” – taken from the phrase boot boys in the 1830’s/40’s – cleaning guests’ shoes and boots.
Three years later he married hotel servant Mary Rickard in Burnley and then enlisted in the East Lancs Regiment. He joined the British Expeditionary Force to France from Folkestone in October 1917 but was wounded in action just two months later.
He suffered another gunshot wound in August 1918 and was treated in Aldershot and Brighton respectively.
George and Mary returned to Yeadon and he died on March 21st 1955, having become a textile operator. He was living at 8 Milton Terrace and was interred in Yeadon Cemetery.
