Comment Donated by Dennis Thornton, this is a photo of his father John Arthur Thornton seen here as a despatch rider for Aireborough messenger services, part of Leeds Skyrack Civil Defence Network. Significantly this was taken on the day the Second World War began.

John Arthur Thornton in East Africa, he was the father of Dennis Thornton who donated the image.

John Arthur Thornton was in West Africa waiting to be demobbed from Jordan. He was sent to train East African troops, he was the father of the donor of the photo, Dennis Thornton.

After serving in the Army John Thornton worked for Craven Dairies in Guiseley, seen here with a milk float.

John passed away 19th April 1985.

Photo donated by Dennis Thornton, it shows his mother Elizabeth and sister Anne and presumably Dennis Thornton in the pram.

It was taken during the summer at Westfield Oval, the houses are Ministry of Aircraft Production (MAP) homes erected during the 2nd WW for people coming to the area to work at the AVRO factory. They remained for some years after the war ended before being demolished and replaced by permanent homes.
