Comment | These children were in the last year of Junior school and about to part in different directions. Some would move up to the Senior department at South View, others to Aireborough Grammar School, Ilkley Grammar, Prince Henry’s at Otley or occasionally a pupil would gain a scholarship to Woodhouse Grove School, Rawdon, and in 1954 Stephen Griffiths did just that. On the front row, kneeling down on the right is the donor of this image, Ken Lee. |

Children playing outside one of the huts which served as classrooms for the infants, Mrs Kilburn was the class teacher.
The prefabricated buildings were erected during 1939-45 period to house the influx of children who had come to the area with their parents who were working at the AVRO factory.
Westfield School was initially built of these prefabricated buildings which were heated by a pot-bellied stove, apparently the children sat at the front near the stove would become too hot, by contrast those at the back kept their coats on as they were very cold.
Additional buildings were also provided for Guiseley School.
Two of the children on the climbing frame were Howard Armitage and Jane Dobson, Paul Slater is the boy holding the ball on the right.
