Mabel Harrison – Yeadon, 1930s to 1950s

The 1930s brought better conditions for working people, many council houses were built and people had bathrooms and electric light for the first time.

She left at 14 and reluctantly went to work in the local mills, later she worked at Crompton Parkinson’s, Carter and Parkers and Silver Cross.

Very early on, by rote, we learned our ‘times table’ up to 12x, I think that if you asked any of my generation a ‘times by’ question they would answer it instantly.

No vacuum cleaners then for general cleaning and the stone cellar steps and floors were a down on the knees job with a scrubbing brush.
