An article and photograph published in the Wharfedale newspaper on 1st May 2014, which featured Coach Road and Esholt Springs.

Lodge Keepers Cottage 1 1906

Editor’s Note:

The ‘Keepers Cottage’ marked ‘1’, on the adjacent map of 1906, was a Lodge on the Esholt Estate, and as seen on the photographs on these webpages. The cottage was demolished many years ago but the site of where it stood is clearly documented within these pages.

Why, you may ask am I telling you this, well the reason not to confuse you, the reader, as to the fact that the building marked as ‘2’ on the adjacent map, Boggart House, was also known locally as ‘Keepers Cottage’.

Now that this has been clarified, please enjoy browsing these pages knowing which ‘Keepers Cottage’ you are viewing.

This “Island” was formed by the outfall of several becks, three cottages were built in the 18th Century and owned by the Esholt Estate. The Estate was purchased in 1904 by Bradford from the Misses Crompton – Stansfield for £239,000.
It had been bought to build a sewage treatment plant, the Island was filled in and the cottages disappeared.

A colour tinted postcard of the “Island”, a message on the reverse reads ” Dear Mrs Uttley, I expect you will know the place shown on this view, if you don’t you have missed one of the prettiest walks around Bradford. Shall be giving you a look up in about a months time. Hope you are well,
H Dennison.

The card was sent to a Mrs Uttley in Leicestershire.

You see it will be Tim’s last night at home and I have got an invitation as well. I am Sorry Elsie but I will the week after without fail with love from Miriam.”
On the margin is written “You can let me know on Saturday if it will be alright for next week”.

Another of our play places. We spent many a Happy hour in these woods as children, and even as late as 2009. I took my wife, who is suffering from alzheimers walking in the woods and also on the old Yeadon railway line.

As boys in the 30s and 40s, we would spend all our play time in Bellyburn Woods. We went in behind the Hopwood’s cottage on Stone Top, and up into the woods.
At the summit, there is a stone outcrop with two rocks with a small crack between them.
We gathered acorns, built a little fire in the crack, and roasted and ate them.
Apparently they are not poisonous, because we never felt any ill-effects from them.
Then we would go on the top of the “Roman Wall”, between the railway and the Old Coach Road, and back home through Guiseley, and West Field.
