High Royds Hospital Undated
Title High Royds Hospital
Date 08 October 1888
Location Menston
Photo ID I769
Comment High Royds Hospital taken in 1888. What a marvellous image showing the building on top of the tower. Never knew this existed until today when this image came into AHS possession, truly a remarkable image showing how the original building looked like. Sadly no records of when this was removed from the tower. But wonderful to see. Ed. J Brayshaw. 01 Feb 23. Donated by Anthony Lupton.

Research by Elaine Ellwood, President AHS, revealed the following undated information from the Architect’s Narrative: Roof hipped with decorative iron finials has central tower (former water tower) which has 2 transomed windows to lower stage; clock in painted arched recess of several orders to upper stage; and machigolated, embattled parapet (formerly surmounted by timber framed, gabled water tank).

As a schoolboy, c1944, I was confined in the Isolation Hospital with scarlet fever. Lots of school mates also.
I think it was a epidemic. We were well looked after, lots of gargling and hot baths. Our skin came off in sheets.
We had great fun. Six weeks off school, whoopee.
