Warren House Farm 1857 – 1982 (1)

Warren House Farm Undated

Title Warren House Farm
Date Undated
Location Yeadon
Photo ID V167
Comment The dwelling seen here was one of a complex which comprised Warren House Farm, off Cemetery Road. This building dated back to the 17th Century, it was adjacent to Coney Park, a rabbit warren for the town created in 1631. A Coney Lodge is written about in the Parish Register 1649, rabbits were an essential food for many years and supplemented other meats, this became Warren House Farm. In the bottom left corner a stack of what appear to be rabbit hutches are visible. In 1962 the Airport Joint Committee bought the land for £9,000 to create part of a new runway for Leeds Bradford Airport which opened in 1962. Further extensions in the 1980s meant the line of Cemetery Road was altered, Warren House Farm finally disappeared. Donated by Ken and Doreen Lawson.

Warren House Farm – Undated

The original farm buildings had a large extension built on by John Farrar Lawson.
From the 1950s the farm was tenanted by Ken and Doreen Lawson who farmed it in tandem with Novia Farm. Part of the tenancy agreement was that should the Leeds Bradford Airport authorities decide that they need the land the tenants would vacate. This proved to be the case when an extension to the runway was planned in the late 1970s early 1980s. Mr and Mrs Lawson moved to Moorside farm in 1982.
The runway extension was constructed to the other side of Warren House Lane, the farmland is now used for airport car parking and office buildings.

Editor’s Note: I just had to enlarge this image to see who was seated in the doorway, sadly a little bit blurry but I think that there is a young girl. JB. 03 Dec 21.
