Comment This is a photo of the Lodore Falls Hotel which overlooks Derwentwater in the Lake District, a waterfall is a feature in the grounds, the hotel is still in business. E E Slater took several images on glass slides of people in rowing boats, it is possible that Derwentwater was the location for them.

On board the steamer “Prince of Wales”, a possible location is Derwentwater or one of the other bodies of water in the Lake District. E E Slater took photos of a visit to the Lodore Falls Hotel on Derwentwater at the same period.

Passengers on board the “Prince of Wales” which was built by the Clydeside company of Fairfield Shipbuilding in 1887. She was bought by the Steamship Packet Co. and could accommodate 1,546 passengers, the vessel was powered by a coupled 2 crankshaft engine. It was in service for the Manx Line running between Liverpool and Douglas on the Isle of Man. In 1915 the ship was sold to the Admiralty and saw service in the Eastern Mediterranean, after WWI the ship was sold and broken up in the Netherlands.

This is one of the many photos taken on glass slides by E E Slater, it shows a group who were on holiday staying at the Lodore Falls Hotel on Derwentwater. They are being transported in a pony and trap or riding a bicycle.

This image has been identified as being taken at the Fairy Steps, Beetham, South Lakes, Cumbria, by Philip Archdale using Google search and photos. A cleft in the steep rock face has steps cut into it, a man and a boy recline on the rocks while a girl stands on the rock behind them on the left. Women observe from above. Image on a glass slide taken by E E Slater.

Views of a sea-side resort with a Victorian glass and wrought iron pavilion, can anyone recognise this location? E E Slater had varied holidays in Britain and abroad, the slides which survive give little information about where they were taken, however, through the internet search, it is definitely Bridlington Spa..

A seated group, some of the faces seen here are familiar as the people are seen in many of E E Slater’s photos, it is reasonable to suppose that they were family or close friends.

No further information available until 11 May 2023, when Philip Archdale using Google Search & Photos as well as his own knowledge from past photographs taken there, is now identified as the Wishing Chair at Bolton Abbey Estate in the woods near the Strid.

Fountains Abbey arches, this double image is thought to be for use in a stereoscopic viewer hence two images which come together to form one sharp 3D image, taken by E E Slater.
